Haven’t posted in a few weeks. Apologies if you’ve been dying to hear from me. The Oscars are tonight. I have plenty of opinions on the whole shebang, and I’ll likely have more in a few hours. For now, you can see my predictions along with essays on a few of the major categories at Metroland.

There’s no point in live-blogging this year’s Grammy ceremony, because it’s not really a ceremony. This year’s telecast looks to have about five or six awards presentations, and about 1,000 performances. Which should be a nice change, though I doubt the shift will help the show come in under its alloted time. As of now (7 PM EST, Sunday, Feb. a majority of the awards have already been presented, so now’s a good time to look back at the awards I publicly predicted and see how I’m matching up so far.

Now, the big stuff has yet to be presented, but to recap: I thought Robert Plant and Alison Krauss were bound to sweep, but I’ve had a few changes of heart in the last week or so. In the Record of the Year category, I’d still like to see M.I.A. take it, but that’s highly unlikely. But I also now think it’s Coldplay’s award to lose. Nobody seems to be taking the plagiarism accusations seriously (except for Joe Satriani himself) and the song has been successful in a way unlike no other song in history. And while Plant and Krauss seem like the odds-on favorite for the Album of the Year award, I’m starting to sense a big Coldplay haul (they already have a few, I think) . . . but my heart is still with Radiohead. If they win the big one, finally, it’s proof that the Recording Academy is really trying to turn a corner. (Lil Wayne still doesn’t have a chance, and he seems to know it. But he seems to be cleaning up the rap categories.)

As to my actual predictions, I didn’t actually make a pick for Best Solo Rock Vocal Peformance, but if I had to lay my money down, it would have been on the lovably vanilla John Mayer and I would have won. However, I was sure that Springsteen would win the Best Rock Song category–because he needed a third one, and because Grammy all but ignored the Magic album–and sure enough, he nabbed it. And Al Green did win, as hoped, a few of the R&B awards he was up for. Which means ?uestlove also wins, which means we all win.
